The development of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods allows us today to study the viral metagenome in unprecedented depth. We apply virus sequence-independent amplification by random PCR combined with NGS to define viral infections in immunocompromised patients with the aim to unravel previously undetermined etiology of infection. The obtained knowledge will provide us with an advanced understanding of disease-specific viruses that emerge in certain immunocompromised settings (transplantation, primary immunodeficiencies, HIV infection), which may open avenues for tailored diagnostics and improved treatment options.
